Christian, Drew, Ian, and Steven participated in the annual Orienteering Festival at Beaumont Scout Reservation, on March 24, 2012, where in 60 minutes, they accumulated 90 points by locating several controls hidden about the reservation. Troop 501 put forth two two-man teams, that tied with each other for 4th place in the 11-12 year old group. The boys utilized map-reading skills to search out and find controls throughout the reservation, and then returned with their punch cards, just in time! Each team was given 60 minutes to find as many controls as they could, punching their card at each control, making sure to punch each in the right spot, in order to get credit for that control. A total of 30 controls worth various points were hidden amongst the rocks, trees, and yes, even latrines! The controls closest to the starting line were worth the fewest points, and those further from the starting line, and harder to get to, were worth the most points. Our Scouts did a fine job, accumulating points from controls from a wide variety of difficulties. All are looking forward to returning, next year.
